This is a new white tail to Juneau waters for 2013. The whale hasn't been given a permanent number yet and the temporary one is from Suzie Teerlink's first sighting and photograph of this whale on August 12. My photo, above, is from August 26. When I first saw this tail, I thought is was Flame and if you compare the two tails, there are a number of similarities that show why a photograph is the only way to be sure.
At this point we know little about this whale, even its sex. As of this writing (August 28, 2013) I've seen the whale two days in a row in North Pass. It joined a group of "our" whales, Spot (1434), Bullethole (1703), Juneauite (1447) and Juneauite's 2013 calf that have been taking advantage of the tidal flow through the pass for feeding for the last week or so.

In my continuing attempt to learn to recognize our whales with other characters than the dorsal flukes, here I can study the leading edge pattern. I haven't figured how to keep all this information in my head to use it out on the water!
